Automotive Warranty Protects Main Components

When you purchase a new vehicle, one of the last things you're thinking of is what will happen when something breaks, and you need to use your automotive warranty. Like any new relationship, you never focus on the bad in the beginning. It is always the positive that keeps you going. But eventually, most of us will have to face the inevitable and unenviable problems that car ownership brings.

Call it Murphy's Law if you will, but problems with your car always seem to spring up after the standard manufacturer's warranty has expired. You do have other options - namely, extended warranty coverage. But you will want to make sure that the coverage you purchase is right for you, and for your car.

Here are some points to consider when looking for an extended warranty:

What is covered by an extended warranty? Make sure you understand going in exactly what will be covered, and what will not. Will it be bumper-to-bumper coverage, or just on the drive train? Will it include wear and tear, or just breakage? What is covered will also likely affect the price of your extended warranty - one that covers less will be less expensive for an initial outlay of money, but could end up costing you more down the road.

How much of my original warranty is left? A new car may have up to five years, and up to 100,000 miles on its initial coverage. Check your documentation to see exactly how much time and distance your warranty covers you for. If you plan to sell or trade in your car before that time expires, there is little sense in purchasing additional coverage. However, if you plan to keep your car for several years, an extended coverage warranty might make good sense. However, the best time to make that decision is before the original warranty runs out. Some third-party warranty companies will not provide an extended warranty, once the original has fully expired.

Is my car prone to problems? Check online to find out what others are saying about the reliability and repair history of your make and model of vehicle. Some cars are simply more prone to certain issues, and knowing that in advance could make a big difference in your decision to purchase an extended warranty.

Who is my warranty provided by? You can either purchase an extended warranty from your dealership, or from a third party company. Some dealerships will only provide an opportunity to purchase the extended warranty at the time of purchase, and some will allow you to add it up until the expiration of the original warranty. Check with your dealer for details. A warranty through your original dealer will likely be easier for you to navigate, as the dealership has a regular working relationship with that provider.

These are all important points you will want to consider and understand when you review any automotive warranty, whether it is your current plan, or an extended warranty you are considering adding to your car.
